Advisors to the president of any nation should not have sizable control of an active company over a certain amount of money. That is one way to limit conflicts of interest.

No, but apparently Trump and Elon do.
It doesn't matter whether or not the action causes the outcome they desire, what matters is that government officials are not supposed to use their
office to advertise or endorse a product. It is prohibited to prevent conflicts of interest and misuse of position.
While they have been very careful not to call Elon a government
employee, which they think keeps him free of such restrictions, the
President is indeed a government official.
