It's not the hosting company who will want to read my mail, but it's
the other elitists who will try to infiltrate the hosting companies (another institution for them to ruin.)

Exactly. Or the Gov't who steps in with a "warrant" to tell your hosting company to give over your information - and not be allowed to tell you that it happened.

I expect that some day the elitists are going to shut down the internet
in favor of some private new protocol anyway.

    I doubt that because:
    1. The people who are intelligent enough to do that, simply won't. Or will subvert it in some way where it won't work correctly. Remember that Elitists are dumb.
    2. The Elitsts are a very small percentage of the population. Having 99% of the population pissed at you all at the same time is a really bad life choice.

I felt some reassurance when I saw an ad on TV for Safari browser. Maybe the web is here to stay for now, but how difficult would it be for the average person to adapt to a world where the google play store replaces the web browser?

A class of people are being designed to think that they have to use an app for everything. Like, "I want to know what time Walmart closes so I'm gonna have to download the Walmart app."

It's only a generation away. I already use F-Prot on my Android devices to install software. I never use Google Play anymore. And while that's hard for the "average" person to do today, it won't be as the "average" person gets more tech savvy.

There's always been stupid people and there will always be stupid people. We just need to create systems that don't allow stupid people to hurt others.
